Using Our Talents for God’s Glory
We feel it when Kathryn VanWyngarden leads an assembly. We see it when Lindsay Bosveld steps onto any court. We hear it when Kennan Benjamins sings. There are so many ways to experience it. It is a gift, the gift of a specific talent that God has chosen for each of us. And it is beautiful.
But how do we discover our talents? Usually a talent is a natural ability. Through piano lessons and singing in a choir I discovered my musical talent. I especially enjoyed how these things came naturally to me. However, once things became challenging I wanted to quit. In my mind, talent meant “easy.”
You have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.”
Why bother trying hard at something that God intended for me to have? Because it is God-pleasing to cultivate one’s talent. For the gifted musician, that means sticking through every instrument squeak, finger slip on the piano, or voice crack.
It means making every crescendo matter for a reason beyond obeying the black markings on a white page. If God is worthy of our greatest efforts then, with any talent, one must persist for the glory of God.
Through developing the gifts we have been given, we can see that talent works in two ways. Firstly, it is God’s gift to us. He chooses the gift, and he chooses the person.
Secondly, what we do with it is our gift back to God. Hamilton District Christian High is a place for both of these; a place to discover and develop our talents. With exciting courses, sport teams, music ensembles, and community groups, students are challenged intellectually, physically, artistically, and spiritually. May God be glorified in the gift he has given you by the way you use it back.
